Year 1

Dear Year One Parents and Families,

We would like to start off by thanking every single one of you for your great support this year!

It has been a great pleasure teaching year one and seeing the students blossom into their own individual characters. It was a challenging year for all as we spent two long terms learning at home remotely, but year one proved they were up for the challenge.

In science we learnt about the biology of living things and the five senses. We learnt about light and sound in our physical science unit and studied the weather in our Earth and Space topic. Students completed book work, projects as well as hands-on experiments to achieve the learning outcomes.

In maths we covered topics such as number patterns, skip counting, three-dimensional shapes and their attributes, duration of time, Australian money, data and volume and capacity.

In English we studied three text types, recounts, reports and narratives. The highlight of the term would have to be the excellent narrative stories students wrote. We practised all term and in the end, students wrote their own fairy tales which were very creative and interesting to read.

Students are beginning to see the different structures in the various genres. In writing, students have been using language conventions such as grammar and punctuation when writing sentences and they are beginning to edit their work and make better spelling choices.

We loved our hands-on activities as part of STEM and integrated studies.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the year one families for their support and dedication throughout 2020. Congratulations to the year ones on the completion of this tricky year and best wishes for 2021. It was a great team effort on all our behalf.

Have a safe and wonderful holiday break. We look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.

Kind Regards,
Ms Karatekeli and Mrs Alici
